The New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) implementation for Nursery batch of 2026-27

 

 

The NEP recognises that most of a child’s brain develops in the first six years of life. With this understanding, it places significant emphasis on early childhood education and has mandated an additional year in the introductory stage at school.

The objective is to give more time to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy as well as social and emotional growth. These skills stand the students in very good stead in the later grades and makes the early years’ fun and stress-free.

Aligned with the NEP guidelines outlined in DOE circular DE 23(749)/Sch Br /2025/976 dated 24/10/2025 our school will introduce an additional year in the foundational stage in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for the Nursery batch of 2026-27. The children will be learning in an unhurried way – with much more focus on oral work, and pre-number, pre-reading and writing skills.

The NEP 2020 has restructured the school curriculum and pedagogy into a 5+3+3+4 system which works out as follows:

Foundational Stage:   for 5 years ( Nursery to class 2 )

Nursery        :         3+ years

Prep.            :         4+ years

Upper Prep. :         5+ years

Class 1         :         6+ years

Class 2         :         7+ years

(The nomenclature for the classes is different in different schools)

 

Preparatory Stage    :      3 years from class 3 to class 5

Middle Stage            :      3 years from class 6 to class 8

Senior Stage             :      4 years from class 9 to class 12
