Rise and Rise of Dinosaurs

A session on “Rise and Rise of Dinosaurs” was conducted by Mr. Pranay Lal, a biochemist and an environmentalist, on April 18, 2024 at Cambridge School Sriniwaspuri.

Talking about the rise and fall of dinosaurs 290 million years back and the flora and fauna that existed during this period, Mr Panay Lal emphasised on the evolutionary events that occurred due to viral infections and tectonic movements.  He explained the cause of extinction of these huge creatures which dominated on the earth for more than 170 million years. The extinction of these large animals occurred due to the volcanic eruptions. Some of the species which survived the volcanic eruption shrunk in size and finally evolved into birds.

Interestingly these are many sites in India which are rich with dinosaur fossils but due to the apathetic attitude of the government bodies, the common masses are largely unaware of these sites. The sad part is that many of these sites are also getting damaged due to lack of awareness about their importance.

After the presentation he conducted an interesting activity in the Chemistry lab which involved making solutions resembling the composition of  urines of tiger, leopard and bear using urea, resorcinol and ammonia. The characteristic smell of the urines  of these wild animals could be used effectively to keep away other animals from attacking the crop fields.
